Commander Honglan Weaknesses & Resistances

Section titled “Commander Honglan Weaknesses & Resistances”

While Commander Honglan has high mitigation against all weapon damage types, she is slightly more susceptible to certain attacks.

  • Recommended Damage Types: Slash and Stab attacks are the most effective options. While still mitigated, they receive less damage reduction compared to Blunt attacks.
  • Elemental Weakness: Information on her elemental weaknesses is currently being gathered.

This battle is a test of your defensive skills and ability to create openings. Follow these steps to gain the upper hand against Commander Honglan.

  1. Choose an Effective Build We recommend several builds that have proven effective against Honglan. The Stagger Longsword Build is particularly strong, as its Sword Counter discipline skill can deflect and stagger Honglan after most of her weapon attacks, creating valuable opportunities to deal damage.

    Recommended Builds:

    • Stagger Longsword
    • Flame Spear
    • Immortal Axe
    • Clash Dual Blades
    • Magic Shortsword
  2. Equip High Mitigation Armor Most of Honglan’s attacks are sword-based, dealing Slash and Stab damage. Equip armor sets with high mitigation for these damage types to increase your survivability.

    Recommended Armor:

    • Ming Armor set
    • Centipede Armor set
  3. Gain Skyborn Might Stacks Before the Fight Before you descend the ladder towards the Lotus Pond boss arena, you’ll find a lone enemy on a rooftop. Defeat this enemy to fill your Skyborn Might stacks. Entering the fight with fully charged weapon skills and spells will give you a significant advantage.

  4. Master Deflect and Clash Mechanics Countering Honglan’s sword attacks is crucial.

    • Deflecting her attacks will cause her to stagger, leaving her open for a follow-up attack.
    • Clashing your weapon against hers will reduce incoming damage and allow you to continue your own combo.

Equip passive skills and disciplines that enhance these abilities. However, be aware that techniques like Clash and Deflect will not work against her non-weapon attacks, such as her quick punches and stomps.

Weapon TypeMoves with Clashes and Deflect
    LongswordsSword Counter Discipline
    Sword Savant Passive
    One-Handed SwordsPhantom Flurry Weapon Skill
    Swift Lunge Discipline Variant II
    Flickering Blade Discipline (Pseudo-Deflect)
    AxesAxe and Hook Passive
    Chop and Weave Passive
    Dual BladesFearless Cleave Weapon Skill
    Block Weapon Skill
    Blade Dance Discipline Variant I
    Sudden Strike Discipline Variant I
    Whirling Flurry Discipline Variant I
    Feather Chaser Passive
    Leaf Slasher Passive
    Wave Breaker Passive
    Deadly Shadow Passive
    SpearsEbb and Flow Weapon Skill
    Vortex Thrust Weapon Skill
    Spear Flurry Discipline
    Spearveil Discipline

Some moves like Flickering Blade can block attacks without staggering Honglan. For this fight, it’s better to use a weapon capable of true deflections, like the Longsword, to create more openings.

  5. Utilize Alacrity for Magic Builds If you are using a magic-focused build, spells with the Alacrity property are extremely useful. Casting one of these spells just before Honglan’s attack connects will cause you to automatically evade while dealing damage. Be ready to dodge or deflect immediately after, as she can quickly chain into another attack.

    Alacrity Spells:

    • Echo of Lu Bingzhang: Dropped by the Feathered Priest - Lu Bingzhang boss in Shu Sanctum.
    • Aurum Feather Force: Found on a corpse down the stairs to the left of the shrine in Palace Hill.
  6. Break Her Poise with Heavy Attacks Attack Honglan from behind with heavy attacks to rapidly build up her poise damage. Once her poise is broken, she will be vulnerable to a powerful Obliterate Strike. You can unlock the Poise Break Bone Needle in the skill tree to apply Poise Break to your weapon through Temperance.

Commander Honglan attacks with swift, aggressive combos. At 50% HP, she switches to Dual Blades and incorporates new, dangerous ranged attacks into her repertoire.

During this phase, Honglan uses a single sword and a mix of unarmed attacks. She often closes the distance with a Forward Stab before beginning a combo.

MoveDescription
Forward StabShe dashes from a distance and thrusts her sword forward. This can be deflected to create a stagger opening. If you dodge, be prepared for a follow-up attack.
Quick PunchesA rapid two-punch combo. This attack has a short reach, so dodging backward is safest and can give you a moment to heal.
Ground StompShe stomps the ground, creating a small area-of-effect blast. Dodge away as soon as she lifts her foot to attack.
Spinning KickTwo quick, spinning aerial kicks. Dodge backward to avoid the attack and her potential follow-up.
Spinning Upper CutShe spins to build momentum before delivering a powerful upward slash. Dodge backward to maintain a safe distance and watch for a subsequent slash.
Sword SlashesHonglan performs a quick dashing slash, either upward or downward. She may perform two slashes in a row. Dodge the first and be ready to dodge the second immediately.
Knife ThrowShe executes a side flip while throwing four knives in a cone-shaped spread. Stay clear of the front to avoid taking heavy damage from multiple hits. This move can be dodged in any direction.

Upon reaching 50% HP, Honglan switches to Dual Blades. Her attacks become faster, and she adds several wind-based ranged slashes to her moveset, often mixing them with her Phase 1 attacks.

MoveDescription
Double Wind SlashHer first move after switching weapons. She slashes twice, sending two diagonal projectiles. Dodge to the side, as dodging forward or backward can get you hit by the second slash.
Vertical Wind SlashShe sends a single vertical slash projectile. This can be dodged in any direction except backward.
Horizontal Wind SlashShe raises her weapons and spins, sending out a horizontal projectile. This can be dodged in any direction except backward.
Diagonal Wind SlashShe spins into a crouch and unleashes a single diagonal projectile. This can be dodged in any direction except backward.
Quick StabA fast, short-range stab. Dodge to the side to avoid it and her follow-up combo.
Arc SpinA multi-hitting spinning attack. Dodge sideways to get out of its range.
Dual Blade Side SlashSimilar to her Spinning Upper Cut, but with dual blades. Dodge backward to see her next move, but stay alert for a follow-up.
Sword CycloneShe dashes toward you and unleashes a deadly whirlwind attack that hits in all directions. Dodge to the left or right as she begins the dash to create distance.
Leap AttackShe jumps high into the air and slams down with her blades. Dodge forward as she lands to get behind her for a counter-attack.
