Key to Victory

  • Equip armor with high Frostbite resistance. Almost all of his attacks inflict it.
  • In Phase 1 (Polearm), focus on dodging his slams and punishing the recovery.
  • In Phase 2 (Sword), be prepared for faster, more aggressive combos. Deflecting becomes more valuable.
  • His Throat Slit kick is a grab attack and must be dodged; it cannot be blocked.

Proceed forward past the Cloudspire Outskirts shrine and follow the path upward. Once you reach the top, continue moving through the misty fog until you reach the bridge of Snowpeak Pass. The boss arena is just ahead.

This fight is a tale of two weapons. In the first phase, his polearm attacks are slow but have immense range. Focus on creating distance and punishing the end of his combos. At 50% health, he switches to a sword, becoming much faster and more aggressive. High resistance to Stab, Slash, and especially Frostbite is crucial for survival.

Liu Cheng’en uses his polearm for wide, sweeping attacks and heavy slams, all of which build up Frostbite.

  1. Triple Ground Slam He leaps high into the air and slams the ground at your location, repeating this three times. Dodge to the side for each slam and attack after the third.

  2. Upper Cut and Triple Stab He performs an uppercut with his polearm, followed by a three-hit stab combo. Dodge backward to avoid the uppercut, then dodge sideways to get behind him during the stabs.

  3. Side Slash He places his polearm over his shoulder and slashes downward in a wide arc. A single dodge in any direction is sufficient, but be ready for a follow-up.

  4. Spinning Ground Slam He spins twice with the polearm, dealing damage, before finishing with a heavy slam. Keep your distance during the spins, then dodge the final slam.

  5. Glaive Dance A long combo of mixed slashes and stabs. It’s safest to dodge backward repeatedly to stay out of range until the combo finishes.

At 50% HP, he creates a snowstorm and switches to a sword, becoming much faster.

  1. Weapon Switch His transition move. He coats himself in a snowstorm and switches weapons. He will immediately follow this with an attack, so be ready to dodge.

  2. Sword Spin He performs a single spin attack, followed by two quicker spins. This combo is difficult to dodge and is best countered with a Clash or Deflect.

  3. Double Side Slash Two consecutive side slashes performed very quickly. Dodge to your right to avoid them, or dodge forward to get behind him.

  4. Sword Dance A fast, multi-hit slashing sword combo. It is best to Deflect this combo, as dodging it is difficult due to its speed.

  5. Blizzard He summons a blizzard with himself at the center, dealing continuous damage within its radius, before finishing with a sword slash. Stay clear of the blizzard.

  6. Icicle Toss He throws two volleys of four frost projectiles. Dodge to the right for the first volley, then immediately to the right again for the second.

  7. Throat Slit He performs a spinning kick. If it connects, it locks you into a grab animation where he slits your throat for massive damage. This attack cannot be blocked and must be dodged.

Triple Ground Slam

  • Description: His most telegraphed polearm attack. He leaps into the air and slams down three consecutive times.
  • Strategy: Dodge sideways for each of the three slams. After the third slam, he has a long recovery period, allowing for a fully charged heavy attack.

Sword Spin

  • Description: A fast, multi-hit spinning combo with his sword.
  • Strategy: This move is very difficult to dodge reliably. It is a perfect opportunity to use a weapon skill with a Clash or Deflect property, such as the Twin Bandits’s Block.

Throat Slit (CRITICAL)

  • Description: A spinning kick that transitions into a deadly grab attack.
  • Strategy: This is his most dangerous move. As soon as you see him start to spin on the ground for a kick, dodge forward and to the side. This will avoid the grab and place you behind him for a punish.
